Barney WharerauThis Saturday will see the first of the Bi-Annual Barney Wharerau 9s Tournament.  The Senior 9s Tournament will be part of a festival of Rugby League with the Northern Swords playing against the Wellington Orcas at Lindvart Park in Kaikohe.  The day will see rounds played between 10am and 12noon, then the Swords game at 12 with the 9s tournament concluding in the afternoon.

The Barney Wharerau 9s is a memorial tournament celebrating the life of Bernard (Barney) James Wharerau, Barney descended from Waima and Moehau in the Hokianga, he was the youngest of ten children.  Barney tragically died on Sunday 17 September 1995 aged 29 on the field playing Rugby League for the Otahuhu Gazelles.  Barney left behind four children, Ina, Teau, Otene and  Anthony.

The Tournament is being driven by the Wharerau whanau and is launched this year to commemorate the 20th year of his passing.  The Kaupapa behind the tournament is to remember the family man, to contribute back to his community, but most importantly giving back to the game he loved, Rugby League.

The day forms part of RLN’s strategy to bring the Swords to the community, we have a young team that we are working with for the future, by bringing a festival in to surround the day will help bring in extra supporters.  The NZRL National Competition is hugely competitive and of an incredibley high standard. Come down to Kaikohe and enjoy some high class Rugby League. Bring your Whanau (free entry), support the Swords and be a part of the first ever Barney Wharerau 9s Tournament.  Also forming part of the day will be the Swords 15s and 17s who will down to support the premier team.  The Swords 15s and 17s are in a training camp in preparation for their National Tournament which starts on September 28th in Rotorua.

Elijah Taylor will join Sam McKendry in the NRL team. Alongside the two NRL stars, four Northlanders will be making a start with their NRL aspirations as they join the Penrith Panthers SG Ball (U18s Team) and the NYC Holden Cup U20s Team.  The players are James Dean Fisher-Harris, Hamish Pomare, Corey Selwyn (Penrith SG Ball) and Corey Naera (NYC Holden Cup U20s).

Corey Naera and James Fisher-Harris left for Australia last Friday and Hamish Pomare will leave toward the end of this week.  All three boys will join the Penrith Panthers, on two-year cadetship deals.  While Corey Selwyn, who played one game in 2013 for the Northern Swords 17s moved to Australia to join his parents, has also received a contract offer from the Panthers.

The deal will see the three linking up with current Northlander NRL stars – Elijah Taylor and Sam McKendry.  “Elijah in particular is great, I have spoken with Elijah at length about the boys coming over to Penrith and he is excited to be able to work in a mentoring capacity for the boys.” Alex Smits RLN GM said.  “It was important for the boys that we found them somewhere where they would be looked after and not just another number.  Having both Elijah and Sam at Penrith couldn’t have worked out better”

James Fisher-Harris and Hamish Pomare both played in the Northern Swords successful 17s team this year. Both were also named in the NZRL 18s wider training squad earlier this year.  James is a hard running backrower while Hamish is an outside back.

The contract is especially rewarding for Corey Naera, as he was at risk of missing out on the opportunity.  Corey was named in the NZRL Merit U17s team in 2012.  He completed his schooling at Opononi Area School and moved to Auckland to join the Warriors Academy as an unsigned player.  Although Corey was unwanted by the Warriors, RLN drafted him into the Northern Swords premier squad from Auckland where he was a standout performer as an 18 year old in a much improved Premier team which resulted in him getting picked up by the Panthers.

James, Hamish and Corey have all been signed by SFX Sports, Australia’s Premier Rugby League management agency.  Daryl Mather from SFX met Jim Larkin at the NZSSSC Secondary School Rugby League nationals where he saw Hamish and James play.  Daryl and Jim rekindled a friendship that spanned back to when Daryl signed Sam McKendry and as result took an interest in the “Untapped Potential” in Northland.  SFX currently manages some of Leagues greats, including retired Darren Lockyer, current Kiwis Stars, Kieran Foran, Sam McKendry, Russell Packer, Kevin Locke and Jason Nightingale.

The cadetship will have James, Hamish and Corey Naera living and working at the multimillion dollar Fernhill Farms – a 1,750 acre estate built in the early 18th Century.  Fernhill is a play ground for Australia’s rich and famous as it is also an exclusive Party Hire venue and Equestrian facility.

Rugby League Northland will keep a close eye on the boy’s development and will look to be able to bring the boys back for the Northern Swords 2014 Campaign to play in the NZRL Pirtek Premiership.
