The Premiers had their best ever season in the Pirtek NZRL National Premier Competition by finishing 6th. They had their first win ever in the competition with a resounding 40 -22 win over the Central Vipers. They following this up with good performances against the Counties Manukau Stingrays and by pushing the Wellington Orcas for 80 minutes live on Sky TV.
The Northern Swords 15s finished a disappointing 8th out 8 teams at the NZRL National 15s Tournament, held in Papakura between the 30th Sept and 4th Oct. The team didn’t adapt that well to the daily grind of tournament after suffering a number of key injuries early in the week.
Although the scoreline of 44 – 0 shows a one sided game, the Swords Premiers portrayed themselves as a credible football team throughout the 2013 Season. Perennial easy beats, the Swords notched up their first ever win against the Mid-Central Vipers and put on an entertaining match on TV, against the Wellington Orcas, coming within a couple of referee calls to being able to win the game.
With both teams needing to win to reach the final, the Akarana team, were too classy for their Northern counterparts, to earn themselves a place in next Monday’s finals against the Counties Manukau Stingrays. Had the Swords won they would have been the first team outside of Auckland to have made the National final – but it wasn’t to be.
