Northern Swords – Premiers Awards

The Premiers had their best ever season in the Pirtek NZRL National Premier Competition by finishing 6th. They had their first win ever in the competition with a resounding 40 -22 win over the Central Vipers. They following this up with good performances against the Counties Manukau Stingrays and by pushing the Wellington Orcas for 80 minutes live on Sky TV.

Swords Premiers Rally for Last Game of the Season

Although the scoreline of 44 – 0 shows a one sided game, the Swords Premiers portrayed themselves as a credible football team throughout the 2013 Season. Perennial easy beats, the Swords notched up their first ever win against the Mid-Central Vipers and put on an entertaining match on TV, against the Wellington Orcas, coming within a couple of referee calls to being able to win the game.

Swords Premiers – Israel Tahere – second-half Hat Trick!

For the Swords Premiers it was a game of two halves. Going into half time at 36 – 0 down, it looked like it was going to be a repeat of the 17s match. At half time, stand in coach Tom McCaffrey took the players next to the long jump pit and asked them what it was. “A sandpit, and that’s where young children play,” was his explanation. “If you want to play like kiddies I suggest you get in there and play, cause you’re not playing like adults!” he continued.

Sunday 29th September – Northern Swords v Counties Manukau Stingrays – played at Massey Park, Papakura – 17s KO at 1:00pm and the Premiers – KO at 2:30pm.

History Made for the Swords with Two Wins

Hard work and commitment pays off for the Northern Swords, in the NZRL National Competition, as history was made in Ohaewai, with the Premiers winning their first ever game and the 17s winning their third game in a row to remain on top of the table.

Northern Swords Move Selection Boundary

The Northern Swords Premiers, have named their 17 man squad to play against the Waicoa Bays Stallions on Sunday 15th September in Huntly.

Included in this squad are brothers Ash Harawira and Corey Naera, who both starred for the Championship winning Pt Chevalier in the prestigious Auckland Fox Memorial. Older brother Ash, who plays at Centre, starred for the Premier winning Pt Chevalier team, while 18 year old Corey, who plays at Full Back, Centre or backrow was a part of the Fox Reserve Grade winning team.

Northern Swords v Canterbury Bulls

The Swords Premiers didn’t have such a flash start to their national campaign going down the Canterbury Bulls by 52 – 0. The Swords were outpaced and outclassed by a very strong and well prepared Bulls outfit. However there were positives from the performance. 14 debutants took the field, in the same fixture in 2012 they lost to the Southerners by a massive 84 – 0.
