After last weeks massacre by the Akarana Falcons (Auckland)the Northern Swords Bounced back to not only compete with the Mid Central Vipers but the Jim Larkim coached 15’s goit their first win of the campaign and the second for the Swords teams for the year.
Swords Secure 2nd Victory for 2012
Central Vipers v Northern Swords – Fitzherbert Park, Palmerston North Septemerb 9th.
Under 15’s: Swords 16 – Vipers 10
Under 15’s secured their first win (second for Swords Squads) for 2012. In a real arm wrestle in torrential rain the 15’s came away with well deserved win.
Under 17’s – Vipers 16 Swords 12
The Under 17’s were unluckly not to come away with a win, narrolwy losing 16 – 12. With two tries disallowed the battered and bruised 17’s (8 players backing up from 7 games in 8 days after going to the secondary school nationals) played with committment and quality. They will be looking for a big game this weekend against the Wellington Orcas.
Premiers: Vipers 36 – Swords 8
A day at the office not to talk about.
Falcons Fathers Day Massacre of the Swords – September 2nd
Akarana (Auckland) Falcons v Northern Swords. Arnold Rae Park, Kaitaia.
Under 15’s: Falcons 54 – Swords 6
The Swords 15’s came out on fire and were unlucky not be ahead after 15 minutes with a clear try disallowed. However the Akarana team was class from number 1 – 17 and eventually wore the Swords down. The Swords lack of experience was evident as Akarana ran away with the match.
Under 17’s: Falcons 60 – Swords 14
The Swords were confident after their first round win against Waicoa Bays. However the Akarana team lead by two big props steam rolled the smaller Swords Pack. Akarana took advantage of any second phase play almost always resulting in a four pointer. Swords players Tumoana Halkyard, Corey Naera and James Dean Fisher Harris showed that we can match with out big city competitors with stand out performances.
Premiers: Falcons 68 – 10.
Too big, too powerful, to skillful too fast. Was best how to sum up Akarana. When the Swords controlled the ball they could compete with the ball, but defensively the Swords we outclassed.

*Played at Moerewa
The Takahiwai Warriors thumped the struggling Moerewa Tigers 88 – 8 to go top of the RLN Multikai Cooker Premiership. The Tigers, who 12 months earlier had a record 9 game winning streak and the way to being minor premiership, have only managed one win out of 6 games in 2014. The wheels haven’t quite fallen off but they are certainly struggling against a well-drilled hungry Takahiwai team, who moved to first place in the Premiership sitting on 10 points.
Hokianga Pioneers move back into the top two with a solid 30 – 16 win over the in-form Portland Panthers. The Pioneers join the Hikurangi Stags on joint second place on 8 points, as the Stags were beaten by the Otangarei Knights 40 – 26. The Knights should be considered serious contenders, who have now won three matches in a row.
The Kerikeri Makos are still yet to register their first win in two years after they lost to the Muriwhenua Kuaka 24 – 16. While the Northern Wairoa Bulls join Portland and Otangarei Knights on 6 points with a convincing 38 – 24 win over the Horahora Broncos.
