RLN General Manager recognised at Sport Northland awards

Alex Smits, RLN General Manager was humbled on Friday when he was awarded the Rowsells Collision Repair Leadership in Sport Award. The award recognises the most outstanding achievements/results by a sport leader in relation to their sport and/or the sport sector.

Departing staff leave lasting legacy

With four successful seasons under his belt, Alex Smits is stepping down as Rugby League Northland’s General Manager and taking a break from his rugby league career. Smits, who started in the role at the beginning of 2012 has previously played professional rugby league overseas, worked for the Rugby Football League in the UK and made the move North from Wellington where he was Community Development Manager with the Wellington Zone.

2015 Season Highlights

2015 was another solid year in the growth of Rugby League in Northland on and off the field! Our final playing numbers have again grown 2,995 in 2014 to 3,472 in 2015. The growth can be attributed equally to the Leadership through League program and the Club competitions. RLN continues to provide Northland kids an opportunity of playing Rugby League. Every school in Northland, Primary, Intermediate, Secondary, Kura Kaupapa or Area School has an opportunity to play Rugby League. In total, via our schools programs, we had 1,740 kids play in at least one meaningful game of Rugby League.

League in Numbers

RLN continues to strive toward growing the interest in our game. Through school engagement kids get to experience a quality Rugby League experience. Our biggest challenge moving forward is to develop formal links between school programs and clubs.
