The Junior League competition kicked off properly last Sunday across Northland, with growth in most grades. It was a big day at Lindvart Park in Kaikohe with the Joint venture clubs of Otaua Valleys – Tautoro Titans having a celebration day to unveil their new playing stripe.

The day was a real celebration of a community Rugby League spirit, with all the Mid to Far North clubs turning up on mass.  Games were played on an immaculately presented Lindvart Park, where the 7s, 9s and 11s played.  Across the road at Northland College the 13s, 15s and 18s played with Northern Wairoa Bulls and the Otangarei Knights 15s making the trip up to join the festivities.

Down at the Bluegoose in Whangarei, it was also another big day of league with 38 team – close to 500 kids all playing at one venue.  Rugby League at youth level in Northland has come a long way.  Four years ago there was no structured kids competition and yesterday we had 57 teams playing, with close to 1,000 kids participating across the North and South competitions.

Our Clubs are working together to develop and present league as one united community and the results are playing off.  Most clubs have a full complement of Minis and Mod Teams – and the International grades are growing too, we have 12 teams across Northland in the 13s; 8 teams in the 15s; and 5 teams in the 18s.  Within the next couple of weeks we hope to have another 18s team join the competition.

The RLN Scott Electrical Premiership is gaining in momentum as it hits finals time. The event is becoming part of the Northland sporting calendar with three consecutive weekends of finals football played at Toll Stadium. In 2014, over 2500 spectators flocked to the stadium with underdogs the Otangarei Knights snatching victory from the Hikurangi Stags in the dying seconds!

2015 is set to become an even bigger event with Channel North announcing that they will be live streaming the Grand Final live on their TV network as well as via the Rugby League Northland and NZRL websites. The event will be filmed with 3 cameras and will have live commentary. Channel North broadcasts off Freeview terrestrial, channel 35 to about 50,000 households in Northland.

Channel North will cover both the Championship and the Premiership Finals but only the Premiership Final will be streamed live.  The Championship game will be delayed via the RLN Website.

Commencing in March the RLN Scott Electrical Premiership has 10 clubs competing from Dargaville to Whangarei to Kaitaia and everywhere in between. Otangarei Knights are the defending Champions, however the Hikurangi Stags have dominated the landscape over the last eight years winning 5 Premierships and in 2015 again look to be favourites going into the business end of the season cementing the Minor Premiership two weeks ago.

Introducing Alex SmitsIntroducing Alex Smits

I have dedicated much of my life to the game I love Rugby League.  I grew up in Wellington, but was a late starter to League as I spent most of my youth playing soccer.

I represented both the Hutt Valley Dolphins and the Wellington Dukes in the old Lion Red Cup before getting the “call up” to go play League in the South of France.

Over the next 9 years I played for three clubs in France and 2 in the UK.  My last three seasons were spent in the UK as player coach for the newly formed professional club the London Skolars.

This was a very challenging role as we have a very tight budget and limited playing resources (much like being in Northland), however we managed to build a very credible and competitive club.

On my return from Europe, I worked in sales and recruitment, but the call of rugby league wouldn’t go away!

Three years ago I joined forces with Wellington Rugby League as the Community Development Manager.  In three years we managed to develop rugby league at the community level increasing the number of school teams from 4 to 77, which in turn took overall player registrations from under 1900 to over 4500.

I am committed to Northland League – I have sold up in Wellington and moved lock stock and barrel (including my now 8 month pregnant wife Sarah) up to Northland.

I love a challenge and have already seen the passion and skill of the people in northland!

Together we can all achieve!!!
