As part of the carnival of Rugby League at Central Rugby Ground in Kaikohe, were two RLN Scott Electrical Premiership matches. The first game of the day was also a game of two halves with the Muriwhenua Falcons going out to a 26 – 0 nil half time lead, over the Kerikeri Makos. The Makos showed grit and determination in the second half, coming back to 26 – all, until the Falcons scored three late tries to win 40 – 26 and remain unbeaten after two rounds.
The other match was an absolute cracker between Moerewa Tigers and the Hokianga Pioneers. Both teams played a tough uncompromising style of football. It went from end to end as both teams traded try for try. The Tigers took the ascendency into half time with a narrow 14 – 10 lead. The second half continued on in much the same fashion, until the Tigers who showed a superior fitness, were able to break away in the last 20 minutes to win 40 – 24.
In the week’s other fixtures, the Hikurangi Stags would have surprised many with their 40 – 16 win over 2014 Minor Premiers the Takahiwai Warriors . Form should have dictated that the game would be a tight affair, it was the Warriors who scored first, however the Stags ran away with the game after a 25 minute arm wrestle.
The Otangarei Knights bounced back from their round one loss to win a tight encounter with the Northern Wairoa Bulls 30 – 24 and the Portland Panthers showed they are 2015 contenders with a 48 – 12 thumping of the Horahora Broncos. After two rounds the Stags, Falcons, Tigers and Panthers remain unbeaten.
