It was almost a frat day of footy at the Hikurangi Rugby Club, as a farewell to the League season.  In its ‘almost’ final event for the year, there were three cracking games of League. The Inaugural “Frings Trade of Origin” certainly bought out a festival environment bringing a healthy crowd to Hikurangi to watch trade against trade and mate against mate.

Carter Holt Raiders v ITM Rosvall

The first game saw the Carter Holt Raiders defeat the ITM Rosvall team, a topsy-turvey game that saw the lead change several times.  It wasn’t until the final minutes that saw RLN Development Officer, Joe Rau, run 80 metres, to score under the posts and covert his try to secure a 26 – 22 win.  Rau qualified to play for the Carter Holt team as an ex-employee.

Scott Electrical Sparkies v Placemakers Builders

In the second Frings Trade of Origin fixture, the Scott Electrical Sparkies evened the ledger with the Placemakers’ Builders, with a convincing 38 – 16 win.  This was the second game in their three match series, the Builders won the first encounter 40 – 16 which see both teams put everything on the line for the 3rd and final match (date and time TBC).  It was a massive turnaround for the Sparkies, with the difference being more attention to detail, as they recruited the services of Northland personality, Lee “Goldie” Tuson to Coach.  They were also fortunate to have new apprentice sparkie, and Hikurangi Stags flyer, Joachim Edmonds as the hero in the team, who scored four tries.

Frings are proud supporters of Rugby League in Northland having sponsored the Horahora Broncos for the last two years as well as the Northern Swords.

The Broncos sponsorship has been driven by Frings Favourite Bar Stool – local Whangarei personality and Horahora Broncos Chairman Alf Wendt and Broncos Coach Sean Tito.

Alf was also instrumental in getting Frings on board to support RLN, “My favourite Fijian Alf took me down to Frings to meet Wazza and Leon and basically they love league and wanted to help out, both guys are great to get on with, so its a great fit for RLN.’ Alex Smits from RLN said.

Frings are that passionate about league that they now organise an annual trip to the 9s.  This year they took 40 down and for 2015 they have 64 people booked!!

Currently the name Richie McCaw and Dan Carter would bring only visions of victory in Sundays World Cup final, however to Rugby League in Northland it brings a picture of generosity as the iSport Foundation a foundation set up by McCaw, Carter and Ali Williams was responsible for supplying Primary Schools with Rugby League balls yesterday at Rugby League Northlands best of the best festival.

Yesterday’s Best of the Best Rugby League festival was a culmination of a number of festivals played throughout Northland in 2015. In total over 40 Primary Schools (Years 4- 6 and 7-8) played Rugby league from Ruawai in Kaipara to Paparore in the Far North. All the festivals are run on the back of the Leadership through League Program that sees the Maori teaching philosophy of Tuakana Teina in action, with older siblings coaching younger siblings, as College students earn credits for coaching in Primary schools and organizing festivals for the schools to participate in.

It was a great spectacle to see so many young students with a high skill level displaying their wares. It was also fantastic to see so many young girls mixing it up with the boys and showing that they have got the goods to compete at a high level too, in fact, some of the female players were the stand out players of the tournament. Particular mention has to go to Sheridan Kera and Meadow Cook from Dargaville Intermediate.

All games were closely contested all the way through to the finals series. Several of these games in fact went into golden point, which goes to show the Far North students know how to close out games. All regions of the North had representation in the final series. It was very pleasing to see teams outside of Whangarei, pushing the city based schools.

2015 is the second year that Rugby League Northland has run the Best of the Best festivals. Played in two grades, Year 4- 6 and 7-8. Eventual winners in both grades BOTH successfully defended their 2014 titles. Year 4 – 6 Whau Valley. Year 7 – 8 Whangarei Intermediate!
