Northlander Caleb Aekins has made his debut for the Penrith Panthers Holden Cup team on Sunday. Aekins was part of the U20s winning side which dominated and outclassed the Canberra Raiders 74-10. Aekins was a late call up, but relished the opportunity to come off the bench and contribute to his teams win.

The former Whangarei Boys’ High School student made the trip across the Tasman after signing with the Panthers in 2015 after being an integral part of the Northern Swords junior system for the past three years. Aekins was recruited by Australian player representative Daryl Mather for his maturity, vision, strength, speed and impressive work ethic.

Aekins, a previous NZRL trialist, was also part of the Scott Electrical Premiership winning side, Hikurangi Stags in 2015 where he was awarded the Man of the Match award.

The Panthers now sit comfortable at the top of the Holden Cup table with only one loss to the Raiders in round one.

In a sign of how eager teams are to play in the 2015 NorthTec Adam Blair competition, the tournament kicks off today with a hastily rearranged fixture between Okaihau College and Kaitaia College, hosted at Kaitaia (previously scheduled to play on Wednesday).

The NorthTec Adam Blair rugby league college competition starts in the school Term 1, and has done for the past two years. This year, the competition attracts 11 colleges, an increase from last year, with a new combined team called “Kura Hokianga” which is a selection of players from the Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Te Tonga O Hokianga, Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Kaikohe and the Opononi Area schools.

2014 defending champions Kamo High School take on Dargaville High School this Wednesday, playing at Kamo High School. Kick off is 4.30pm.

Rugby League General Manager, Alex Smits, says we are continually excited about the NorthTec Adam Blair competition and how it attracts the schools. It is a fiercely competitive tournament, having had 3 different winners over the past 3 years, Whangarei Boys High School (2011 and 2012), Kaitaia College (2013) and Kamo High School (2014), fighting for the Adam Blair tohunga. Players are also individually competing for a place in the prestigious NorthTec Adam Blair XIII selection, which will have the opportunity to play a Warriors Development team on 28th March at Kaikohe, as part of the RLN Premiership Season Opener.

The Junior League competition kicked off properly on Sunday the 11th of May across Northland, with growth in most grades. It was a big day at Lindvart Park in Kaikohe with the Joint venture clubs of Otaua Valleys – Tautoro Titans having a celebration day to unveil their new playing stripe.

The day was a real celebration of a community Rugby League spirit, with all the Mid to Far North clubs turning up on mass. Games were played on an immaculately presented Lindvart Park, where the 7s, 9s and 11s played. Across the road at Northland College the 13s, 15s and 18s played with Northern Wairoa Bulls and the Otangarei Knights 15s making the trip up to join the festivities.

Down at the Bluegoose in Whangarei, it was also another big day of league with 38 teams – close to 500 kids all playing at one venue. Rugby League at youth level in Northland has come a long way. Four years ago there was no structured kids competition and yesterday we had 57 teams playing, with close to 1,000 kids participating across the North and South competitions.

Our Clubs are working together to develop and present league as one united community and the results are paying off. Most clubs have a full complement of Minis and Mod Teams – and the International grades are growing too, we have 12 teams across Northland in the 13s; 8 teams in the 15s; and 6 teams in the 18s.

Below is a selection of photographs from the games hosted at Lindvart Park and Bluegoose – more pictures are available on our Gallery, with all pictures from both venues on our Facebook page.
